Welcome to Liberation Meditation Yoga
Happiness is a decision. It is a moment by moment series of choices. It is not determined by what happens to you; it is determined by what you believe about what happens. In every life, there are moments of great joy, great disillusionment, and great pain. Some of these moments are accompanied by great change. Our challenge is to find balance during times of turmoil, peace during times of anguish, and ballast during times of joy. Only when we are able to do these things are we then able to create happiness in our lives. And yet, for many people, these basic components of happiness are difficult to the point of impossibility to acquire.
A single cherry blossom is a thing of delicate, poignant beauty. A cherry tree in flower is an ethereal, ephemeral cloud of fragile pastel color. For less than a week in the early spring, the cherry tree is in full, glorious bloom; then it begins to drop its petals so quickly that they swirl through the air and carpet the ground like a spring snow. In a single day, the cherry tree can lose almost all of its flowers, and their beauty will pass into memory.
The events of our lives are like the cherry blossom; they arrive, we are immersed in the experience, and then it is over. But our lives themselves are like the cherry tree. Over and over, in the beautiful cycle of life, our lives bloom and leaf, fruit and become bare. When we can begin to learn how to appreciate the fleeting beauty of the cherry blossom, while understanding that the tree will continue to flourish long after the blossoms have dropped, we then begin to understand the nature of happiness.
Our lives consist of fleeting experiences, each moment like a cherry blossom, born and then dying in a flash of existence. Much of our suffering comes from our resistance to this thought. We want to make the moments we cherish last forever, and we wish to avoid the moments that bring sadness. We attempt to alter the life cycles of our moments in order to produce a particular outcome that we perceive will make us happy. We then begin to believe that we are the cherry blossom instead of the tree; that is to say that we define ourselves as the experience, instead of the one having the experience. This is the cause of much suffering in our lives because no experience, no circumstance, no good or ill fortune, no moment can last forever. To hold onto a single moment or experience stalls the cycle of life. Think of a cherry tree whose blossoms could never fade and fall to the ground; the tree could never follow the cherry blossoms with the leaves that harvest the sun to nourish it, and could never bear fruit to create a new generation. Clinging to single moments or experiences in our lives has the same effect on us as the everlasting flowers would have on the cherry tree; attachment to an experience, even a wonderful experience, stalls us and prevents us from learning and growing and evolving. Attachment prevents our experiences from bearing their fruit of wisdom for the future, and chains our emotions to the past as the present passes us by.
Overcoming attachment requires of us that we understand the implementation of two concepts. The first is that we must all be responsible for ourselves. We are the only ones who are responsible for our thoughts, our emotions, our words and our actions. The second concept is that we must give up control of the outcome. John Lennon once said that life is what happens to you when you’re busy making other plans; we can have goals, and hopes and dreams, but we can’t become attached to a particular version of a tomorrow that hasn't yet happened.
Liberation Meditation was founded to provide access to the tools that can help us to stay grounded in the present; to release attachments; to learn to be responsible for and to control ourselves without attempting to control other people or manipulate them for our own desired outcomes; to cultivate a stable, peaceful center; to honor our minds and bodies, and to learn how to create our own happiness. Join us as we explore meditation, the breath, movement, gratitude, self-acceptance and self-forgiveness, passion and many other techniques for the cultivation of fulfillment in our lives.
It is only as we begin to let go of our attachments that we can begin to truly appreciate the beauty of each moment in our lives as they, like the cherry blossoms, fill our hearts with the joy of being alive, and then become treasured memories. And it is only when we remember that we are the cherry tree, and know that we will endure through many spring’s blossoming and many winter’s sleep, that we are able to trust the rhythms of life and let go of our attachments.
